Progress Update

Here is the redesign of the original cover &opening-page spread with the cyan, the new 1-2 page layout for the "Natural Allergens" and a proposal for a sticker direction. They're a little on the large end. About 4-5" in width, but we can change that if we need to. Okay! Still working, can't wait to see everyone's progress later.

Tuesday, April 7, 2009

Hey guys, I really think we need three pages..
Two pages isn't enough real estate and it isn't that impressive, you know? Are we just starting out with two for now? Can we add later?

Logo

Through the focus groups I found the the number one association with a "healthy home" was the idea of love or family. I wanted to take that idea and connect it with asthma and overall health. The lungs start to form into a heart, the mark is also supposed to abstractly/subconsciously suggest open arms as well as a geometric structure for the home. The color is of course only temporary, I think this would be a little too "loud."

progress. it's 4:30 am.

Monday, March 30, 2009

I just realized that my last images had been resized terribly small. Here are links to their full sizes:

Bottle Mockup
T Shirt Mockup
Logo Mockups

Sunday, March 29, 2009

Ummm
I'm having doubts about designing the manual because I don't know what kind of paper we're printing on / or how many colors we can use. Cost is everything. I need to know!

Spray Bottles Online

LINKS to spray bottle sites. Different styles, different prices. These are "natural plastic" options and they run at about .90-something per bottle with the nozzle, total. One also has color options. Regular plastic is cheaper.

Update from Sundays Meeting And Next 2 days:

This is what we are doing by tuesday night:

4 presentation boards 11x17, letramax mounted to include the following:

#1: HEALTHY HOMES IDENTIFIERS

This board will include the 10 best logo solutions for Healthy Homes. It will help us get a better idea of what the client would like.

#2: HEALTHY HOMES: HEALTHY LIVES

This strategy will involve talking and interacting with children to spread messages about Healthy Homes.

After talking interacting with the children they will receive a t-shirt and/or a plant to then be able to spread the message to others.

This activity could be done in schools on Asthma Day or during Baltimore Green Week and the ecofestival.

Board will include:

2 specific logos

examples of the plant

examples of the t-shirts

examples of activities that could be done

#3: HEALTHY HOMES BBQ/COOKOUT

This is about creating relationships through sharing food. Embracing family.

Board will include:

2 specified logos

examples of festive décor designs: banner, blow up man, flags

examples of rubber wristbands

Examples of herbs to give away: how to grow basil starter kits!

#4: HEALTHY HOME CLEANING SOLUTIONS

This is about teaching people to clean cheap, easily, effectively, and most importantly healthy.

Board will include:

- label designs

- recipe book pages

- quick tips

-possible starter kits

images on this thing always turn out wrong for me

Here are some links to my work thus far:
http://img14.imageshack.us/my.php?image=bottlemockupf.jpg
http://img19.imageshack.us/my.php?image=healthyhomeslogomockups.jpg
http://img15.imageshack.us/my.php?image=healthyhomestshirtmocku.jpg

The colors are still a little off from what I actually chose, but you get the idea, and I'll show the real stuff in class. The first is obviously a more fleshed out bottle design. The second is more logos, and the third is one T-Shirt design I did. I can make more, but for now I have to move on to my Main Streets work.
update: thinner?

Okay, these are new, but also based on some sketches I made in class. They're like Michelle's in that they're supposed to represent the ubiquitous Baltimore row-style homes, but simplified. The concept was that healthy homes are the "building blocks" or foundations of healthy families. Also trying to make it so it stands on its own with the the type. Color help? I think that cyan blues, greens and orange just look clean and modern, but I'm open.
P.S. I just made them taller and leaner, more like the buildings themselves.

More logos......
Hi everyone. Here's my first batch of logo sketches based on some doodles I made.
Any suggestions? Advice? Get it? The first bunch are supposed to look like hearts. Well, I'm still trying to make them do that.

edit::::
fixed the color a bit

Statistics about asthma and healthy homes

a few statistical resources I've found:
http://www.asthmainamerica.com/cities/baltimore.html
http://www.aaaai.org/media/resources/media_kit/asthma_statistics.stm
http://www.hshsl.umaryland.edu/resources/sitesbysub/statistics.html

I also sent out a powerpoint that I found specifically about healhty homes in Baltimore. It has great info in it.

okiiii here's logos for the 'cookout' >_<
wheo~

please click them and view with right sizes.
They got blurred and the scales are wrong! ;_;
Give me some healthy feed backs >_<

Do i also have to design for the cookout? oh shoot -_- was i supposed to design logos for cookout? not for the healthy home in general???? ahhhh ;o;

My designs thus far

Today I was planning on using as my big work day, but I do have some stuff in the works. Please comment and such and I can adjust. The colors got a little screwed up in the image hosting process, but they aren't off by too much. The general scheme is still there.

PRESENTATION FOR WES, PAT, AND BARB

WE WILL GIVE A BRIEF PRESENTATION TO THE CLIENT WEDNESDAY

This will be one of the few times we will actually meet with Wes, so we need him to have full confidence in us. Remember, the Lead Coalition is a big contributor to the funding of these campaigns.

WE NEED TO STAND OUT

To stand out, we need this:

I will modify our proposal to be up to date for Wes, and also a new proposal for Pat and Barb.

1 mounted presentation board for each strategy

Each presentation board should include:

- only extremely relevant research: this should not take up bulk

- logo versions

- name variations for campaign

- design versions of how the campaign might look

- when & where the strategy should be implemented

- distribution ideas

80 % - WHAT IS EXPECTED OF YOU NEXT WEEK!

I hope that everyone received Bern's email and read it carefully.

This is much more than the jobs I have posted below, so this means you need to take your task and QUANTIFY IT!

This does not pertain to just the logo - I am expecting at least 3 completed logo designs from everyone.

The rest of our completed designs also need be quantified! This means versions of whatever you are doing whether it is a bottle label, t-shirt, banner for cook out, mural, etc.

COALITION MEETING APRIL 1ST

Meeting with Wes and the Coalition will potentially be NEXT WEDNESDAY APRIL 1st!

Not sure how we will be getting there...

cancelled meeting

Sorry about canceling the meeting today : my 9:00 am class was cancelled and I just really couldn't wait that long for a 15 minute meeting.

Gangs and Schools 2009 statistics

I just saw a story on the news that said this:

In 39 schools in Baltimore City, there have been over 500 arrested juveniles (combined) said to be gang members

(Tell me that's not an issue related to healthy homes)

Wednesday, March 18, 2009

High Risk Involved

I know this may have been mentioned by all at some point, but we need to remember the high risk involved in this project.

I think a surprise event of any kind (ex. surprise concert), or any super aggressive guerilla tactics have potential to be recipes for disaster. Bringing people together from rival corners has someone gets shot written all over it. Maybe that's dramatic but I just want to stress the point that we need to be subtle as this is an extremely delicate matter.

Logo sketches wanted

We must be thinking about logos, names, and plans of action. Please post your logo ideas, color scheme ideas, typography ideas, etc. Our next client meeting will likely be the week after we return. We need to get a good hold on a plan and start executing that plan! (I feel a sense of urgency, maybe you couldn't tell, haha)

Thinking Realistically

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2U8S93MWJuk

This is an awesome video of a chick washing marble steps in East Baltimore.

I feel our group is extremely ambitious, and as like Bernard, I don't want us to be discouraged to do something large
and monumental. But I want us to be realistic, what can we actually change?

Monday, March 16, 2009

What to do over SPRING BREAK!

TO DO ASAP:

A few of us met with Bernard before break and decided this is how we must move forward:

ALL IDEAS NEED:

1.)   SYMBOL OF IDENTIFIER (logo, marker, consistent symbol to identify the initiative)

2.)   A NAME (initiative needs a name to identify with)

3.)   A CAMPAIGN  (how will this initiative play out, how are we actually going to do this?)

(Everyone needs to be working on these 3 things - this is what will make a client BUY something- post your work so we know what each other is doing!)

ALL OF OUR IDEAS CAN BE BROKEN INTO 6/7 CATEGORIES, OR LOOKED AS A WHOLE:

1.)   GUERILLA ATTEMPT: Large inflatable man to drive people to a cook out to be held on Sundays, where events could be held, and healthy homes messages could be spread.

2.)   OWNERSHIP ATTEMPT: Interact with community and give them spray bottles, gloves, brushesBold, etc. to take home.

3.)   OWNERSHIP ATTEMPT: Give them a manual as well. Teach people how to clean cheap and effectively.

4.)   GUERILLA ATTEMPT: Host a concert with musicians to bring people together, possible surprise concert. Give  something away at the end of show, have a speaker.

5.)   TO PARENTS THROUGH CHILDREN: Give children potted plants, accompanied by game, coloring book, OR puzzle,  to spread important messages to parents.

6.)   GUERILLA ATTEMPT: Large Banksy installation, a mural (I think this may need to be done legally…)

7.)   GUERILLA ATTEMPT: Magnifying glass on a dust mite, aggressive approach, as symbol-stickers, shirts, manuals

8.)   BUILD COMMUNITY CAPACITY: Creating relationships with neighborhood youth.

(Please add all other ideas not mentioned)

Bansky

NOTES FROM OUR LAST MEETING 3/11/2009:

Client is setting up focus group for “community testing” and meetings with the Safe at Home coordinators ASAP (to be announced)

-       Wes (coalition) will require a proposal from us

-       Focus groups will be a way for us to showcase info: and get more info

-       Asthma DAY May 16, 2009

-       BALTIMORE GREEN WEEK April 18, 2009 Ecofestival

-       Many of these people are VISUAL PEOPLE

-       Client mentioned sculpture, public art (MD crab sculpture campaign)

-       Move away from one time use products, durability, repetition is important

-       Give people something to look forward to!

-       Don’t scare or offend people

PLEASE ADD YOUR NOTES TO THIS LIST

Proposal

[Healthy Homes]

MICA DESIGN COALITION:

DESIGN PROPOSAL

Spring 2009

Project Outline: The area of concern is to create awareness and education on the concept of Healthy Homes in East and West Baltimore.  The concept of healthy homes encompasses many different concerns.

Project Research:

-       To thoroughly analyze all material provided: including focus group recordings, notes, etc.

-       To get involved, in all ways possible, with this community: attend future Days in the Market, other events

-       Attend future focus group to actually talk with community: present to them, and ask them what they think works (testing with community)

-       Analyze thinking patterns (from focus groups) to pinpoint concerns, as well as decide what this community is impacted by

-       Analyze other previous design strategies relating to community outreach, and learn from those strategies

-       Decide which approaches really have impact, and which do not

Goals for end of week 16:

Create a dialogue in the community. Start conversation about important issues. To produce a product or a strategy that people will be receptive to. It is important that our solution is innovative enough to evoke thought, if not action into the community. Creating awareness is the first step to creating action.

Schedule:

Student group will typically meet every Sunday afternoon and Wednesdays for class. Further meetings may be required. Client meetings to be discussed.

3/11/09 – Present initial ideas to client, meet with professor beforehand

3/18/09 – MICA spring break – group will refine solutions based on meeting

3/25/09 - Meet with professor – refined solutions preliminary crit. #1

4/1/09 – Schedule client meeting this week or next to present refined ideas

4/8/09 – Refine ideas

4/15/09 – Present final ideas to Bernard – preliminary final crit.

4/22/09 – Final client meeting

4/29/09 – Final strategy implementation

5/6/09 – Last Day of class

STRATEGIES/ APPROACHES:

Strategy # 1: Creating Ownership

Produce a product/item/ to give away to audience that will help spread HH messages. This item/object needs great initial impact so that the person who receives it will share the message/story.

Strategy # 2: Community Event/Large Scale venture

Organize Community Event, through school, through back yard gardens… Create a movement that people will talk about.

Strategy # 3: Guerilla Approach

Use a symbol to influence thought anonymously. If something is seen on a repetitive basis or constantly confronting the viewer it is sure to be noticed.

Strategy # 4: To Parents Through Children

Send messages to parents through children. Through games, events, etc. Getting parents involved with their kids about important issues.
